Volunteers in Hospice and Palliative Care PDF
By:Rosalind Scott,Steven Howlett,Derek Doyle
Published on 2009-09-17 by Oxford University Press

The book provides comprehensive, practical guidelines on the responsibilities of those who lead, co-ordinate and manage volunteers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams. Volunteers are key workers, who often perform difficult and important work. In the United Kingdom alone there are thousands of volunteers in hospice work, a small proportion doing work with patients, and the vast majority doing equallyvaluable work such as driving, sitting with relatives, manning charity shops and telephones. As a result, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada are very interested in the United Kingdom's use of volunteers.Aimed primarily at Voluntary Services Managers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams, this updated second edition covers volunteer selection, training, supervision and support, and legal and ethical considerations. Information is presented in an easily accessible way, using key points, summary panels and checklists. This book will also appeal to the volunteers themselves.

Geriatric Physical Therapy - eBook PDF
By:Andrew A. Guccione,Dale Avers,Rita Wong
Published on 2011-03-07 by Elsevier Health Sciences

Geriatric Physical Therapy offers a comprehensive presentation of geriatric physical therapy science and practice. Thoroughly revised and updated, editors Andrew Guccione, Rita Wong, and Dale Avers and their contributors provide current information on aging-related changes in function, the impact of these changes on patient examination and evaluation, and intervention approaches that maximize optimal aging. Chapters emphasize evidence-based content that clinicians can use throughout the patient management process. Six new chapters include: Exercise Prescription, Older Adults and Their Families, Impaired Joint Mobility, Impaired Motor Control, Home-based Service Delivery, and Hospice and End of Life. Clinically accurate and relevant while at the same time exploring theory and rationale for evidence-based practice, it’s perfect for students and practicing clinicians. It’s also an excellent study aid for the Geriatric Physical Therapy Specialization exam. Comprehensive coverage provides all the foundational knowledge needed for effective management of geriatric disorders. Content is written and reviewed by leading experts in the field to ensure information is authoritative, comprehensive, current, and clinically accurate. A highly readable writing style and consistent organization make it easy to understand difficult concepts. Tables and boxes organize and summarize important information and highlight key points for quick reference. A well-referenced and scientific approach provides the depth to understand processes and procedures. Theory mixed with real case examples show how concepts apply to practice and help you enhance clinical decision-making skills. Standard APTA terminology familiarizes you with terms used in practice. A new chapter, Exercise Prescription, highlights evidence-based exercise prescription and the role of physical activity and exercise on the aging process. A new chapter, Older Adults and Their Families, helps physical therapists understand the role spouses/partners and adult children can play in rehabilitation, from providing emotional support to assisting with exercise programs and other daily living activities. New chapters on Impaired Joint Mobility, Impaired Motor Control, Home-based Service Delivery, and Hospice and End of Life expand coverage of established and emerging topics in physical therapy. Incorporates two conceptual models: the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, 2nd Edition, and the International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF) of the World Health Organization (WHO) with an emphasis on enabling function and enhancing participation rather than concentrating on dysfunction and disability A companion Evolve website includes all references linked to MEDLINE as well as helpful links to other relevant websites.

Women, Work, and Health PDF
By:Marianne Frankenhaeuser,Ulf Lundberg,Margaret Chesney
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

Until recently, studies of women's health received scant research attention in the context of the overall magnitude of research conducted on health. Even for health issues that affect both men and women, most research has been limited to male subjects, leaving a large gap in our knowledge base concerning women's health. Finally, the decade of the 1990s is ushering in a shift in this inequity. In 1990 the U.S. National Institutes of Health issued a compelling report citing the lack of sufficient research on women's health as a major gap in our knowledge, and a mandate has been issued to add women as study subjects in research or to document why they have not been included. Such directives will undoubtedly lead to a much-needed burgeoning of research activities in the area of women's health as we approach the twenty-first century. Despite limited research resources, however, there have been steady, scientifically rigorous voices in the wilderness for the last several years, and many of the best investigators are represented in this volume. These workers have led the vanguard in exploring psychosocial factors that are likely to differentially affect women's and men's health. For example, women and men engage in social roles that often differ, if not in quantity, then certainly in quality. Sex differences in role expectations, environmen tal qualities, role burdens related to the domains of work and family, and abilities to adapt to and cope with stressful situations may have a distinctive impact on health.
